Murph Hero Workout: More Than a Challenge
Every Memorial Day, thousands of people across the country complete the Murph — one of the most well-known Hero Workouts in the CrossFit community. While it is undeniably a brutal physical challenge, Murph represents something much deeper than fitness. It is a workout performed in remembrance of those who gave their lives in service to our country and in honor of the sacrifice made by Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy.
What Is the Murph Workout?
The traditional Murph workout consists of:
- 1-mile run
- 100 pull-ups
- 200 push-ups
- 300 air squats
- 1-mile run
Many athletes also complete the workout while wearing a weighted vest or body armor to increase the difficulty.
The workout can be partitioned as needed. A common approach is:
- 20 rounds of:
- 5 pull-ups
- 10 push-ups
- 15 air squats
The goal is simple: finish the workout. For beginners, scaling options are common and encouraged. Some people reduce the repetitions, substitute ring rows for pull-ups, or remove the weighted vest entirely. Murph is not about perfection or elite performance. It is about participation, effort, and remembrance.
Who Was Michael Murphy?
The workout is named after Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL officer who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005, during Operation Red Wings.
Murphy and his team came under heavy enemy fire while conducting a reconnaissance mission in the mountains of Afghanistan. In an extraordinary act of courage, Murphy knowingly exposed himself to enemy fire to make a satellite phone call requesting support for his team. He was mortally wounded during the mission and was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery.
Before it became known as “Murph,” the workout was one of Murphy’s favorite training sessions, which he called “Body Armor.”
Why We Do Murph on Memorial Day
Memorial Day is not simply a long weekend or the unofficial start of summer. It is a day set aside to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
The Murph workout has become a powerful Memorial Day tradition because it gives people a tangible way to honor sacrifice through discomfort, discipline, and perseverance. The workout has become a reminder that freedom has a cost.
No amount of running, push-ups, or pull-ups can compare to the sacrifices made by service members and their families. But Murph provides an opportunity to pause, reflect, and show gratitude.
Each repetition becomes symbolic:
- The struggle reminds us of resilience.
- The difficulty reminds us of sacrifice.
- The finish line reminds us to never forget those who never made it home.
The Meaning Behind the Challenge
Murph is not truly about fitness. Fitness is simply the vehicle.
The deeper purpose of the workout is unity, remembrance, and respect. On Memorial Day, people from every background gather in gyms, garages, parks, and driveways to suffer together for a cause bigger than themselves.
Some complete Murph in under 40 minutes. Others take an hour. Some scale every movement. Some walk portions of the run. None of that changes the meaning.
What matters is showing up with gratitude and intention.
Murph reminds us that heroism is real. It reminds us that freedom is not free. And it challenges us to carry forward the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Final Thoughts
When people finish the Murph workout, they are often exhausted, sore, and emotionally moved. That feeling is part of why the tradition continues to grow every year.
Murph is a test of physical endurance, but more importantly, it is a tribute. On Memorial Day, we do Murph not just to challenge ourselves, but to honor Michael P. Murphy and all those who laid down their lives in service to the nation.
Their sacrifice deserves more than remembrance once a year but Memorial Day gives us an opportunity to stop, reflect, and say thank you in the best way we can.
